We make bikes that are meant to last. Taking proper care of your battery is a key element to ensure this. These guidelines will help you take care of your bike and make sure that you can make the most out of your LEKKER ride!
Physical storage & safe handling
Your battery is built with the utmost care for safety, strength and protection. However, it is still susceptible to physical impact or puncture when not treated appropriately. Below are some recommended guidelines for looking after your battery to ensure it will give you optimum range and longevity:
• Do not drop your battery. This may damage the cells. If a battery case or external shell shows signs of damage it is not safe to use and you will need to have the battery inspected to ensure safe usage.
• Store your battery somewhere dry and weatherproof, ideally around 15 C and out of the sun. Any temperature above 45 C will degrade the battery cells over time.
• Store your battery at approx 60% charge during long periods of non-use (eg. If you are going away on holiday).
• Check your battery for damage periodically. Whenever possible it is well worth the effort to remove your battery from its housing or frame and physically inspect it to ensure it is not damaged in any way.
• Ensure adequate ventilation. When charging or storing the battery, try and ensure it is able to breathe and circulate some air. This will help prevent overheating. In cases where this is not possible, ensure temperatures are closely monitored.
Charging and discharging your battery safely
As your battery ages, its capacity will reduce. Your battery has many built in protections, however understanding these and not waiting for the protections to kick in will help prolong the lifespan of your battery.
• Only use the provided LEKKER charger that has the correct current and voltage or alternatively the “Supercharger” that is for sale within our range. Using the incorrect charger is dangerous and could damage the battery, void warranty or in the worst case, cause fire.
• Generally speaking, after charging the battery you should allow it to rest for 15-20 min before starting to use it. This ensures that the chemistry of the cells is settled and ready to be discharged.
• The charger will stop providing power to the battery automatically once it reaches full charge (indicated by the green light) but it is still recommended to remove the charger from the battery after a full charge.
Maximizing E-Bike Battery Life
Here are some tips on how to take good care of your battery to get the best life out of it.
• Do not leave your battery charge below 20% or fully charged for extended periods. Leaving your battery in this state for more than a few weeks can cause degradation to the cells. We suggest charging your battery as part of your daily routine, i.e. when you get home from work or when you get into work.
• Lithium batteries will degrade faster when used or stored in sub-zero temperatures or temperatures exceeding 45 C. To extend your battery's life, we recommend keeping it within the suggested temperature range.
• If possible, fully charge your battery every time. Partially charging the battery will cause the cells to become unbalanced over time, which will limit the amount of capacity available after every charge cycle.
