This week, introducing: Bikes routes in New York!
“In New York, concrete jungle where dreams are made of, there’s nothing you can’t do!…” Oh yes, this week we’re taking you to The Big Apple! It is the most populous and international city in America that is home to The Grand Central Station, The Empire State Building, the famous New York Clam Chowder, and many more! Despite having the look of a busy metropolitan city, with crazy traffic and endless pedestrians walking on the street, New York has more than 1,900km of bike path which makes it a surprisingly bike-friendly city. So fear not! You can definitely get on your two-wheeler and explore the hustling and bustling of the Empire State. And if you’re stuck on where to go, we have your back with this list below of our top 5 bike paths in New York.
Central Park
You can’t talk about New York City without mentioning Central Park. It’s the second most visited attraction in New York, so you can’t give this a miss! This block of greenery that is smack bang in the middle of the city, is definitely a contrast to the “concrete jungle” that surrounds it. There are three bike paths of choice for you keen riders: a 9.8km, an 8.4km and a 2.7km. So whether or not you want a short and sweet ride or cruisy longer one, Central Park has got you covered!
East River Greenway
Ever heard of a little suburb called Manhattan? Well, that’s where this bike path is located – The East River Greenway on the upper side. It is known as one of the most affluent neighbourhoods in New York City, so riding along this bike path might make you feel like one of New York’s elite. Enjoy the view of the East River, Queens, Brooklyn and more as you cruise down this beautiful waterfront. Hope you’re ready because halfway through, the 16km path will lead you to the bustling city streets.
Hudson River Greenway
If the upper east siders have The East River Greenway, then the west side folks, have The Hudson River Greenway. Shared with pedestrians and joggers this is a route that is not only smooth to ride but also has a stunning view of the river. Starting from Dyckam street all the way to Battery Park, and stretching for a continuous 17.7km, it is the longest bike path in New York! But be warned, this is also the busiest bike path in the nation! Reason being that it is a tourist hot spot, so it’s best to go in the morning for a smoother ride.
Ocean Parkway Greenway
The Ocean Park Greenway is actually the very first bike path created in the U.S., so it would be a crime if we didn’t include it on our list! Founder in 1894, this path goes for 7.7km from Prospects Park to Coney Island. And as you cruise down the tranquil tree-lined roads enjoying the fresh breeze against your face, make sure to also stay alert! There are a few traffic lights that you’re bound to encounter along the path, so be sure you’re ready to hit the brakes. Once you’re done for the day, why not end it on a high note by treating yourself to some celebratory ice-cream at the boardwalk along the beach?
Governors Island
Governors Island is a hidden gem, like an oasis in the sea of commotion that is New York. This car-free island will be sure to satisfy your desire to go for a leisurely Sunday ride with the family, without the stop-and-go traffic of the city. You can get to the island via ferries, both the East River Ferry and the Governors Island Ferry, so if you have our own set of wheels, make sure to bring them on! As you ride around the 11km bike path the island has to offer, you’d also get a fresh view of the Manhattan skyline and the iconic Statue of Liberty.
Biking is such a fun way to see New York as well as lessening your carbon footprint. It’s also a great way to squeeze in some last-minute sightseeing and avoid the never-ending traffic.
